Frequently Asked Questions

Who is involved with Miccosukee Neighbors? Our current membership includes residents of Melody Hills, Greater Brandt Hills, Miccosukee Hills, and other well-established neighborhoods around Miccosukee road in Tallahassee who have united to work toward common goals.

What issue brought us together? Tallahassee Orthopedic Clinic’s (TOC) petition to rezone the northeast corner of Blair Stone and Miccosukee from Office Residential to General Commercial.

What happened with the issue? Despite a well-organized effort, which included procuring a respected attorney and city planning expert, which the judge’s order said would be sufficient to uphold a ruling, the City Commission voted 3-2 in favor of rezoning the property to commercial.

  • Mayor John Dailey and Commissioners Curtis Richardson and Diane Williams-Cox sided with TOC and voted to allow the property to be zoned as Commercial.
  • Commissioners Jack Porter and Jeremy Matlow sided with us and voted to deny it.

Why did they vote to approve it? Simply put, TOC hired powerful lawyers who threatened more lawsuits if the City voted to deny the change. They asked the City to ignore the planning expert and new evidence we provided, which the judge’s order said would be sufficient for their ruling to stand.  The three who voted for it ultimately sided with TOC.

What will they build there? The owner sold the property and construction of a Wawa gas station has begun.

What comes next? We continue to work with the city to offer input throughout the development.

What can I do now? You can write your Commissioners. The Mayor and all Commissioners promised to involve us in the development process, so press them to hold to that promise.
